  15. <p>     DIED. GEORGE WILDMAN BALL, 84, State Department official under
  16. Presidents Kennedy and Johnson; in New York City. Ball is best
  17. remembered for advice he gave that was tragically ignored. As
  18. Kennedy's No. 2 man in the State Department in 1961, Ball urged
  19. the new U.S. leader not to send 15,000 soldiers to Vietnam,
  20. arguing that the move would only lead to even greater troop
  21. commitments. Under Johnson, Ball's roles included ambassador
  22. to the U.N. During his postgovernment years, he continued to
  23. analyze the world through such books as Error and Betrayal in
  24. Lebanon (1984), one of many Ball works critical of U.S. policy
  25. in the Middle East.
