- <p> DIED. GEORGE WILDMAN BALL, 84, State Department official under
- Presidents Kennedy and Johnson; in New York City. Ball is best
- remembered for advice he gave that was tragically ignored. As
- Kennedy's No. 2 man in the State Department in 1961, Ball urged
- the new U.S. leader not to send 15,000 soldiers to Vietnam,
- arguing that the move would only lead to even greater troop
- commitments. Under Johnson, Ball's roles included ambassador
- to the U.N. During his postgovernment years, he continued to
- analyze the world through such books as Error and Betrayal in
- Lebanon (1984), one of many Ball works critical of U.S. policy
- in the Middle East.
